On Wednesday, February 26th Food for Thought joined individuals across the country to celebrate the second International School Meals Day. This day is meant to address issues facing cafeterias and connect to connect schools on one of the most critical issues facing the world today – child nutrition.
We ordered sandwiches and watched "Yuck - A 4th Grader's Short Documentary About School Lunch". This documentary featured fourth grader Zachary Maxwell as he went undercover to show the viewer the discrepancy between the NYC Department of Education (DOE)’s online menu and the reality of the school lunches. He exposes the lack of nutrition in the City's public school lunch program.
After the movie, we talked about our school lunch experience and the contributing factors to the lack of variety in school lunches – budgets, policy, time it takes to provide lunch, etc. We also discussed where the responsibility of school lunch lies, is it with parents or with the department of education?
