During the last week of February, we hosted a canned food drive to benefit the Backpack Program that is run by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Children who do not have adequate access to food are forced to sit through class everyday while hungry, which interferes with their learning. The Backpack Program aims to give access to nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to these children, so that they can be successful in their education.
The Backpack Program fills bags with foods such as canned tuna, peanut butter, fruit with pop top lids, and Food for Thought specifically asked for donations of these items during the drive. If students were not able to donate these specific foods, we also gladly accepted monetary donations in place.
Our drive was extremely successful! We received donations of almost 200 cans and boxes of food, and over $50 in monetary donations. As a thank you, all of our donors received a sticker that said “I CAN fight local hunger.”
After we hand all of our donations over to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, these donations will go straight into the backpacks of local schoolchildren. Due to the success of our drive, we plan to continue to host food drives to support local children.
